The Very Hungry Caterpillar Session
Props needed:
- A bag
- Pieces with which a model of a caterpillar can be made
Read the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle in a fun and engaging way (e.g. leave out some words and refrains for them to say).
Make a model of a caterpillar on the floor for them all to see and ask them to take you through the transformation part of the story. As they tell it, put the pieces in the bag (the cocoon) and then pull them out again reassembled as a butterfly – make this model with the same pieces reassembled.
Task Question:
-
Are the caterpillar and the butterfly the same thing or different things?
You could ask the children to draw up a list of things the caterpillar has that the butterfly does not, another list of things the butterfly has that the caterpillar does not and then a list of things they both have.
